Over 2,000 banned objects were withdrawn in Azerbaijan on Nov. 11 as a result of operative search operations in the penitentiary institutes.

The banned objects included 140.1 liters of alcohol drinks, 74 hand-sets, 735,034 grams of different types of drugs, including 697,729 grams of heroin, over nine grams of marihuana, over 23 grams of opium, Mehman Sadigov, Spokesman for the Penitentiary Service of the Azerbaijani Justice Ministry told Trend.

In general, 36 similar facts have been revealed within a year, and persons attempting to carry drugs were revealed.

Penitentiary Service employees prevented all attempts, related to carrying banned objects, this year.

Materials on facts were sent to investigation agencies for juridical estimation.

According to Sadigov, different methods are used to carry banned objects to reformatories and investigation cells.

"It was possible to prevent carrying to penitentiary places drugs hidden within sweets, cheese, Greek nuts, cabbage, meals cooked at home, as well as cans and objects of every day use (soap, hygiene means, and towels), and boot-trees allocated for use in furniture industry. The last similar fact was fixed on Nov. 30. Employees of Reformatory 1 revealed two hand-sets Nokia-5310 in a cake brought as a parcel for a prisoner," Sadigov added.

Sadigov stressed that secret carrying drugs and banned objects by relatives and friends of prisoners mitigates the efficiency of curing prisoners of drug addicting and reformatory work and leads to their repeated bringing to account.

"Efficient measures are taken in the penitentiary system to strengthen the discipline, observe rules of service term and improve reliability of security and guarding. We attach special importance to reformation and social rehabilitation of prisoners. Preventing carry of banned objects to reformatories and implementing state program on drug enforcing are on permanent focus," Sadigov added.

According to Sadigov, reformatories and isolation cells were supplied with necessary juridical literature and anti-drug agitation materials. Special attention is paid to enlightenment work with prisoners and their visitors about health hazard of drugs.
