The Ministry of Finance of Azerbaijan held its first meeting of the commission established under the presidential decree On measures to strengthen social protection of servicemen of the Armed Forces of the Azerbaijan Republic on December 28, 2011, the ministry said on Wednesday

"According to the decree the state will provide housing for the servicemen with distinguished service in Azerbaijani Armed Forces during 20 years or more" the committee's chairman, Finance Minister Samir Sharifov said.

Sharifov noted that The Law On Status of servicemen came into force on Jan 1, 1992. Despite the fact that this law aimed to strengthen the social protection of servicemen and improve their living conditions, it has not been implemented in practice.

"It happens because while passing the law, the real financial capacity of the state hasn't been assessed correctly. A presidential decree of December 28, 2011 provides real and practical mechanism to ensure housing for militaries" Sharifov said.

"The list of servicemen, who should be provided with housing has also been discussed at the meeting. It is primarily necessary to determine the correct criteria by which the list of servicemen with distinguished service will be drawn up in order to achieve the goal."

Commission has decided to use the following criteria: a military rank, military office, place of service, full life time, as well as participation in combat operations, military operations, injury, trauma and concussion, state awards, the number of family members, living conditions and providing housing during the service of the state.

At the same time, it was decided that the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan will submit information on the military to the Commission in order to meet the established criteria.

The next meeting of the Committee will be held in early February.
