About 83 per cent of crimes, recorded in Azerbaijan last year, were detected, Prosecutor General Zakir Garalov said during his speech at the meeting of the General Prosecutor's Office, the press-service of the Office told Trend on Friday.

As many as 24,263 crimes were recorded in Azerbaijan last year, Mr Garalov said.

Compared with the previous year the number of grave and gravest crimes, murders, attempted murders, intentionally causing less serious injury, sexual assault, etc., significantly reduced, he said. Cases of banditry, the creation of criminal gangs, taking of hostages were not detected at all, 82.9 per cent of the 24,263 crimes committed in Azerbaijan were detected.

Last year as a result of targeted operational-search measures carried out jointly with the internal affairs bodies, 246 unsolved crimes committed in previous years, and 51 grave and gravest crimes were solved.

Solving of two previously committed murders was ensured, including solving of such serious crimes as murder of Ganja resident B.Nasirov committed on July 2, 2006 in the village Chaikent of Goygol district, as well as the murder of A.Zhuravlev on March 1, 2008 in the Mardakan settlement of Khazar district were ensured jointly with the Ministry of Interior and Justice Ministry's Penitentiary Service. The investigation of both cases has been completed and the perpetrators brought to justice.

In 2011, all investigative bodies completed investigation of the 15,661 criminal cases, after the approval of the indictments 9650 cases were sent to the courts, effective measures for the payment of property damage in criminal cases were carried out, increased prosecutor's control over the investigation was provided.

In addition, members of the Investigative Directorate for Grave Crimes of the Prosecutor General's Office ensured investigation at professional level of the numerous grave or gravest crimes.

Thus, together with the Ministries of Interior and National Security members of the Islamic Party - Movsum Samedov and six of his supporters were brought to justice. They by the verdict of the Baku Court of Grave Crimes were sentenced to lengthy prison terms.

Also, staff of the Directorae conducted qualitative investigation and took in accordance with the law steps into the murder from a firearm of inhabitant of village Gumbashi of Lankaran region Elshan Huseynov in September, 2010 and wounding of others, as well as the murder of a co-founder of "Azer-Ross" A.Piriyev in July, 2011 and attempted premeditated murder of an accountant.

At the board meeting it was noted that during the reporting period as a result of strengthening of official, executive and labor discipline in the prosecution, the formation of the intransigence to to the negative phenomena, 68 officers were punished in the disciplinary process, 40 officers were severely reprimanded, nine people were dismissed from their posts, four officers were suspended from work in the judiciary for actions incompatible with service in the prosecutor's office.
