Azerbaijani seismologist rejects Armenian side’s statements

Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 15 / Trend / I. Isabalayeva /

The Armenian side stated that a dangerous situation occurred in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea and the Azerbaijani adjacent territories with the seismic point of view as a result of oil and gas production for over 150 years. The devastating environmental disaster may occur. But these statements are absolutely groundless, the head of the National Seismological Service Center of the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences Gurban Etirmishli told Trend today.

Etirmishli considers these statements as illiterate. He added that oil and gas exploration conducted in the Caspian Sea can not cause any environmental disaster.

He said that the operations were not launched in the Caspian Sea now.
"The exploitation work has been conducted since 1949," he said. "Oil is extracted. What danger may Armenia and the region face? The deepest well has been recently drilled in the Shah Deniz field. The depth of this well hits about 7,000 meters."

Armenian geophysicist Mane Akopyan said that there is a dangerous situation in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea and adjacent areas with seismic point of view.

She said that this may create a dangerous situation not only for Azerbaijan, but also for the whole region. If this situation continues, it will be a cause of regional, perhaps, global ecological disaster.
