A farewell ceremony with the president of Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences, academician Mahmud Karimov was held in the main building of the National Academy of Sciences today. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev attended the ceremony.
Scholars, MPs and intellectuals working in various fields also attended the ceremony which ended at 15:00.
President of Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences Mahmud Karimov will be buried at the first Alley of Honour. The 65 year old died of a sudden heart attack.
Mahmud Karimov was born in the town of Irevan on October 18, 1948. After moving with his family to Baku, he finished secondary school. He received higher education at the physics faculty of Azerbaijan State University in 1966-1971.
He also studied at the post-graduate course of the Radiation Research Branch of the Azerbaijani Academy of Sciences in 1975-1978. He defended his doctoral thesis in semiconductor and dielectric physics.
In 2001 he was elected a full member of the Azerbaijani Academy of Sciences followed by becoming president of the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences that year.
