The tenth anniversary celebration of the Peace Corps in Azerbaijan started in Baku on Friday with the inauguration of 27 new Corps volunteers.

The event was attended by U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Richard Morninstar and representatives of the Corps in Azerbaijan.

The ambassador thanked Azerbaijani families who have supported Corps volunteers over the past years. He called for new volunteers to become better acquainted with the culture of Azerbaijan.

The Peace Corps, a U.S government agency, was founded in 1961 by former U.S. President John F. Kennedy to promote peace and friendship and better understanding between countries through cultural exchange. Since then about 200,000 Peace Corps volunteers have served in 139 countries.
