Progress is observed in Azerbaijan in combating human trafficking, OSCE Special Representative and Coordinator to Combat Trafficking in Human Beings Madina Jarbussynova said.
She was on a visit to Azerbaijan on March 9-13.
"I would like to particularly highlight recent legislative amendments to improve the government's response to trafficking in human beings," she said.
Jarbussynova added that Azerbaijan's growing economy has made it a more attractive destination for labour migrants and the country now is combating abuse and exploitation of migrant workers, according to the press release from OSCE.
"In line with our Office's 2012 recommendations, more efforts have been made to prevent labour exploitation," said Jarbussynova, adding that she encourages the country's authorities to continue the control of this sphere.
"I am pleased to report that Azerbaijan's latest Action Plan to combat human trafficking puts more emphasis on labour exploitation," she added.
During the visit, Jarbussynova visited shelters that provide assistance to victims of trafficking in Baku and the surrounding region.
Moreover, she held meetings with high-ranking officials of the country, as well as representatives of civil society and international organizations.
Human trafficking affects virtually all OSCE states, either as countries of origin or destination. This modern form of slavery is an affront to human dignity, often involving psychological terror and physical violence. Human trafficking engages issues of human rights and rule of law, of law enforcement and crime control, of inequality and discrimination, of corruption, economic deprivation and migration.
