During America Days, the U.S. Embassy is hosting the Washington based dance group, Company | E to represent the best of American contemporary dance in a series of performances titled Speak Easy. The Speak Easy dance performances take place in Sumgayit on May 17, Guba on May 19, the Mugham Center in Baku on May 20, and the YARAT yard on May 21 for the closing of America Days.
The U.S. Embassy sponsored all the dancers from Company | E's D.C. based troupe for a week-long road show around Azerbaijan featuring another signature program, Speak Easy. The contemporary dance performance, choreographed by Robert J. Priore, was commissioned by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2015 and features the music of Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Billie Holliday, Ray Charles.
"SPEAK EASY is a celebration of love," noted Company | E Co-Artistic Director Kathryn Sydell Pilkington. "Sometimes hope - love - is the best way to remember what unites us. We have to remember how much we share as we tackle the things which divide us. SPEAK EASY is a reminder of the power of love - a power we will have to draw on constantly if we are to meet the endless issues before us. To make people smile is a deep and powerful thing. That's what SPEAK EASY does."
