By Huseyn Veliyev – Trend:

Each Azerbaijani citizen will have the right to bring a mobile phone into Azerbaijan for personal use only once in two years, a source on the country’s telecommunications market told Trend.

This will help to more effectively fight mobile phone smuggling into country and increase the revenues of the state budget, said the source.

The source further said that some 80 percent of Azerbaijan’s mobile phone market is made from smuggled devices, and this negatively affects the work of official distributors, who are, in fact, on the verge of bankruptcy.

The source said that in practice, the mobile phones bought abroad will be registered by a user’s name, with identification code indicated on the identity card or a passport.

‘While registering the mobile phone, a citizen will be notified of right to apply again for registration of a new mobile phone after two years,” said the source. “The final decision on the second appeal for the registration of a new mobile phone hasn’t been adopted yet and this issue is under discussions.”
