The next "landmark" of Baku White City, pedestrian bridge, provides a solution to major issues in urban planning and plays aesthetic role in urban architecture, AzerNews reported.

The design of the unique pedestrian bridge of Baku White City is being completed. The pedestrian bridge, designed over Nobel Avenue, will connect the new Fountain Square and the Baku City Mall, and will become the new landmark of the Baku White City project, Trend reported.

The bridge is 7-14 meters wide and 237 meters long. Pedestrians will be able to walk 2 km from Babek Avenue through Central Park District, Fountain Square, along the pedestrian bridge to White City Boulevard. The access to the White City subway station will also be available for pedestrians by escalators and lifts to be placed on the bridge.

Construction of the bridge is carried out by the State Highway Agency of Azerbaijan. The German company Werner Sobek took part in the design of the bridge together with local engineers. Architectural solutions were developed by the Dutch company "UN Studio", known in the world as a leading architectural bureau. As part of the Baku White City project, UN Studio, upon the request of investors, has developed twin office buildings facing Nobel Avenue, as well as a bank building.

This company is the author of well-known architectural, infrastructure and urban projects in the United States, the Netherlands, Austria, Taiwan, Singapore, China and other countries.

At the initial stage, the design and construction of the most fascinating pedestrian bridges in the world, such as the Millennium Bridge in London, the Kehl Bridge in Strasbourg, the Sundial Bridge in California, were studied.

The unique design combines safety for pedestrians, charming lighting, street furniture, a wide space for free movement and an attractive atmosphere. Designed landscape will turn pedestrian traffic into a walk. All this will make the bridge a favorite place for Baku residents and tourists, and turn it into one of the new symbols of Baku.

Baku White City project is implemented within the framework of “Comprehensive action plan for improving the ecological conditions in the Azerbaijan Republic during 2006 - 2010” and according to the order of the Executive Power of Baku City dated June 11, 2007 approved by the Presidential Decree.

White City is one of the world's leading and modern environmental urbanization projects. “ATKINS” (UK), “Fosters + Partners” Architectural Company and “F+A Architects” (U.S.) worked on the project as well as the local experts.

Baku White City project has been awarded in the nomination "Best Future Project for Central and West Asia" at the MIPIM Asia Awards 2011 in Hong Kong, Dubai's Cityscape Global and "Best urban development project" in several other exhibitions including local and international ones.

Urban planning is of great importance as the number of population in the cities is constantly increasing. Urban planning is aimed to ensure the efficient functioning of settlements systems, design, construction and renovation of cities, their socioeconomic, engineering and transport infrastructure, the rational use of natural resources, the purposeful activity of the state in the field of cultural heritage and environment protection.

Planning of roads, public transport, bridges and other similar transport engineering facilities is in the foreground. In general, urban planning and land management are a very complicated process. A number of factors must be considered to make the right decisions: density of population, density of buildings, transport availability, ecological situation, spatial distribution of objects, etc.
