Today, Azerbaijani youth and families are greatly influenced from two directions, Deputy Chairman of the Azerbaijani State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations Gunduz Ismayilov said.

Ismayilov made the remarks at the event entitled "Youth and Family: Traditions and Modern Vision" held at the New Azerbaijan Party’s building in Baku on Feb. 7.

He said that one of these trends is ultra modernity, which comes from the West, and another - ultra religiousness which comes from the East.

"I work in the sphere connected with the trends coming from the East,” Ismayilov added. “Unfortunately, one of the main goals of this trend is youth, while the second - Azerbaijani families. Every nation has a peculiar way of life, culture, traditions and customs.”

“Despite there is common religion in Azerbaijan and in the East, our cultures greatly differ,” he said. “We profess one religion with the Arabs, the Turkish people, the Pakistanis, the Malaysians, the Persians, but our cultural values are different and this is connected with the difference in lifestyle.”

“We must protect our religion, but this must not lead to Arabization, Iranization or turning into Anatolian Turks,” Ismayilov added. “Our own culture should be protected.”

“At the same time, we must not turn into the British people, the French people, Americans under the influence of the Western trends,” he added. “We must have moral immunity against such kind of trends, both from the West and from the East”.
