BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 20. UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Vladanka Andreeva expressed her gratitude to Azerbaijan for holding a conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on "Advancing Women's Rights and Empowerment" during her speech at the event, Trend reports.

"Gender equality is an important step towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. We are now in a very transformational phase. This conference will be a new opportunity for women in terms of the future," she added.

Vladanka Andreeva also noted that the UN actively supports the idea of protecting and developing women's rights in Azerbaijan.

"The issue of ensuring women's rights is an integral part of the UN agenda. Today we should use all kinds of platforms for dialog on gender equality," Andreeva added.

She also noted that positive results in the field of gender equality and women's empowerment can inspire new initiatives in this direction in the future.

Azerbaijan (the current NAM chair), Uganda, and Uzbekistan (the future NAM chairs) are hosting the NAM conference on "Advancing Women's Rights and Empowerment" in Baku.

The event is held on the basis of initiatives voiced by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev at the ministerial meeting of the NAM Coordination Bureau in July this year.
