Azerbaijans claims to Georgia for Kura River (Mtkvari) pollution are not groundless, chairman of NGOs Coalition Mtkvari-Araks Giorgi Dzamukashvili told Trends own correspondent. The river use for drinking in Azerbaijan is polluted with excrements, industrial wastes and construction materials

В"This problem shall be solved jointly by all the regionsВ", - he opined.

South Caucasian countries today celebrate Mtkvari protection day, which was instituted as an international holiday in 1999 by NGOs working on ecologic problems.

Dzamukashvili said protection of Mtkvari-Araks basin is vital for all Caucasian countries as water resources are not replenished. В"Yet, it is prohibited to swim and fish in Mktvari, and soon it will be prohibited to drink the water from this riverВ",- ecologist said.

In order to protect water resources, Azerbaijan offered Georgia join the Convention В"Use and protection of transborder rivers and lakesВ" dated 1992.
