Candidate for Post of WHO Director General in Baku

The candidate for the post of Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tomris Turmen, is in Baku, Trend reports quoting the Turkish Embassy in Azerbaijan.

Turmen is the candidate for the post of WHO Head from Turkey. Within the visit, she has already met with the Azerbaijani Health Minister, Ogtay Shiraliyev. The visit program includes meetings with the Azerbaijan Deputy Foreign Minister, Vagif Sadigov, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov and President Ilham Aliyev, the same source stated. The candidate for WHO Director-General intends to hold consultations in Baku with regards to this topic.

Candidates for the post of WHO Director-General have been put forward from 13 countries Kuwait, China, Mexico, Island, Myanmar, Syria, France, Mozambique, Japan, Ecuador, Finland, Spain and Turkey. The meeting of the Executive Committee will take place in Geneva on 6-8 November 2006 to elect the new Director-General. The former WHO Director-General, Chjon Uk Lu, who had headed the organization since 2003, died from a stroke at the end of May.
