Azerbaijan Ecology Ministry Announced Sum of Damage Caused by Fires by Armenia on Occupied Territories

The Azerbaijan Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry announced the sum for the damage to the environment caused by the fires, which burn out on Armenia occupied Azerbaijan territories. Trend reports referring to the Press-Service of the Ministry, that this sum made up 159,5 mln. AZN in 2006.

On the whole, as results of the fires, total of 63,5 thousand hectares of pastures were damaged. Due to this fact, the Ministry appealed to the international organizations, including the Bern Convention Secretariat.

Replying the appeal made by the Azerbaijan party, Eladio Fernandez-Galiano, the Chief of the Biodiversity Department of the European Union, said that EU is actively engaged in defending and protecting the environment and biological diversity of Azerbaijan.

According to him, as a result of the fires, the biological diversity of the region has been subjected to degradation.

EU wants to take part in the implementation of the recommendations reflected in the report prepared by OSCE.
