Another Mass Grave Discovered in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend I.Alizade / In the autumn of 1993, a mass grave was discovered in the southern part of the military polygon in the Pirshukulu settlement of the Absheron district of Azerbaijan, said a former member of the Azerbaijani Parliament, Jahangir Huseynov, who was the Chief of the Absheron Police Department in 1993. Huseynov said that the mass grave was discovered by accident and he, as police chief, inspected the site. According to Huseynov, experts of the Ethnography and Archeology Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan were invited to investigate.

"At first we supposed that these graves were of people killed on 20 January 1990. However, this was not the case. Therefore, we came to the conclusion that the mass grave is of Azerbaijanis killed by Armenians in 1918," Huseynov said. He stressed that it was impossible to investigate further due to the unstable situation in the country.

Several days ago mass graves were also discovered in the districts of Guba and Neftchala. Deputy Director of the Ethnography and Archeology Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, Najaf Musabeyly, said that he is aware of the mass graves in the Pirshukulu settlement, but he has no exact information on the fact. "Complex investigations are being held in Azerbaijan with regards to the discovery of numerous mass graves. It is a long process," Musabeyly said. He could not provide a concrete answer to the existence of plans of the Institute to hold Archeological digs in the Pirshukulu settlement.
