A Criminal Case to Be Initiated After Attack on Azerbaijani Newspaper Editor-in-Chief

Azerbaijan, Baku/ Trend , corr. E. Husseynli/ Ramiz Shiriyev, the Investigator of Police Station 27 of the Yasamal District Police Department has said that a criminal case will be initated after the attack on Uzeyir Jafarov (Reserve Lieut. Col.), the Editor-in-Chief of the Newspaper "Gundalik Azarbayjan" ("Daily Azerbaijan").

He noted that the investigation was currently under its completion. However, it is unknown yet under which Article of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan Republic the future criminal case will be brought due to the fact that the degree of his injuries has not yet been determined. Mr. Shiriyev added that this issue would be resolved tomorrow.

Mr. Jafarov stated by telephone today that through the initiative of the Azerbaijan's Ombudswoman, Elmira Suleymanova, representatives of her administration have visited him. The Ombudswoman's Administration representatives became interested in Jafarov's state of health, as well as the details of the incident. They promised that they would appeal to the corresponding offices and agencies to assist him. Jafarov, in his turn, has said that the investigating officer had met with him today. "I have given evidence of the attack on me. The face of one of the attackers is familiar to me And a video tape with the legal proceedings will be submitted to the investigation on the case of Mr. Jafarov to identify that person. The investigator said that he would submit all materials to the Yasamal District Public Prosecutor's Office to initiate a criminal case," said Jafarov.

Notably, late on the evening on 20 April, as he was leaving the Newspaper offices, the Editor-in-Chief of the Newspaper "Gundalik Azerbaijan" was attacked by several unknown persons. Jafarov was sent to the Medical Clinical Centre with various serious injuries.
