Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. K. Zarbaliyev / Elmira Suleymanova, the Azerbaijani Ombudswoman, does not agree with the proposal of the Council of Europe (CE) to include an item envisaging life imprisonment for women into the Criminal Code
Suleymanova stated that the Azerbaijani policy is aiming for the liberalization of punishment. She believes that including this item into the Criminal Code will just toughen punishment.
Ombudswoman is completely against this proposal.
The CE suggested injecting supplements and changes into the Azerbaijani Criminal Code. The proposals will be submitted to the Parliament in September.
The Azerbaijani Criminal Code sets a limit of 15 years for the imprisonment term of women.
