Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr S. Ilhamgizi / Azerbaijanis residing in different countries in the world will hold celebration ceremonies dedicated to 28 May - Republic Day, a source at the State Committee on Work with Azerbaijanis Residing Abroad reported on 23 May.
A celebration event organized by the Iceland-Azerbaijani Society will be held in Iceland on 25 May, another one organized by the Friendship Society of Azerbaijan will be held in Madrid on 27 May, and one more in Strasburg organized by the Association of French-Azerbaijani Students. The Estonian-Azerbaijani Aydan community in Estonia, and the the Society of Lithuanian Azerbaijanis will also hold their celebration ceremonies on 28 May, as well as celebrations held by the House of Azerbaijan in Germany, and the Congress of Benilux Azerbaijanis in Holland. The AGFA organization will organize a photo exhibition in Paris dedicated to Azerbaijan. But one of the largest events will be held in Strasburg on 29 May with the assistance of the Azerbaijani Youth and Sports Ministry.
The celebrations will be held in Copenhagen (Denmark), Malmo and Hoteborg (Sweden), Prague (Czech Republic), Poland, Sofia (Bulgaria), Helsinki (Finland), Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Turkey, and New Zealand.
The first independent republic in the East (Azerbaijan Democratic Republic) was announced on 28 May, 1918. Two years later on 28 April, 1920 the Republic collapsed under the pressure of the USSR.
In 1991, Azerbaijan restored its independence.
