Azerbaijan’s Latest Amnesty Covers 6,576 People under Non-Detention Punishment

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr K. Zarbaliyeva / The latest decree on amnesty has covered 6,576 people under non-detention punishment (96.7% of the total number of those who are to be amnestied).

As it is reported from Justice Ministry, those are the people involved in correctional and public work, fining, suspended imprisonment, and so on.

The decree on amnesty covered 2,800 prisoners sentenced to imprisonment and restriction of freedom.

The acting Law on Amnesty is the eighth adopted since 1995. The latest amnesty was signed in May 2003 dedicated to the 48th Anniversary of the victory over fascism. It covered 14,000 people (3,400 prisoners were released, the punishment of 2,200 was commuted, 5,400 avoided non-detention punishment, 2,000 avoided criminal prosecution. Seven decrees on amnesty signed so far covered 78,000 people, with 21,325 of them released from detention places.

Over 40 pardon decrees freed 4,378 people from punishment.
