Preparatory Hearing on Appeal by Former Azerbaijani MP Takes Place

Trend K.Zarbaliyeva / The preparatory hearing of the appeal by Huseyn Abdullayev, the former MP of the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani Parliament), against his sentence has taken place. Chaired by Judge Rasul Safarov, the session of Baku Appeal Court decided to begin considering the case on 2 August. Unsatisfied with the decision of the Sabayl District Court, Abdullayev has requested that his sentence be cancelled.

According to the decision of the Sabayl District Court, Huseyn Abdullayev has been sentenced to two years conditional imprisonment. According to the Constitution of Azerbaijan, the persons who incurred court resolution may not be elected or continue deputy activity.

The Azerbaijani Prosecutor General's Office filed a criminal case in contravention of Articles 132 (slaughter) and Article 221.2.2 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code, while at the end of the investigation Article 132 was canceled. The MP was charged with contravening Article 221.2 (hooliganism) and Article 128 (willful infliction of damage to health).

The dispute between MPs Fazail Agamali and Huseyn Abdullayev took place during a meeting of the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijan Parliament) on 16 March. As a result of these actions the Parliament, in compliance with an appeal by the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General, liquidated the immunity of the deputy and Abdullayev was arrested.
