Prisoner Slashes Wrists in Gobustan Prison

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. К.Zarbaliyeva / Vugar Aliyev, a prisoner serving his term in Gobustan prison of Azerbaijan, slashed his wrists to protest against a ban on him having a meeting with his parents, Elnur Aliyev, the brother of the prisoner, told Trend Agency.

The chief of the prison did not permit Aliyev's parents to visit the prisoner. The parents brought a lot of food, however, the prison chief did not allow it to be passed on.

Elnur Aliyev said no medical care was rendered to his brother. "Vugar also cut his wrists several months ago," Elnur Aliyev said. Aslan Aslanov, the former head of the Executive Administration of Shamkir region of Azerbaijan and deputy Agriculture Minister, exerted pressure on Vugar, Elnur added.

Vugar Aliyev was sentenced to life imprisonment for killing Ruslan Aslanov, Aslanov's son.

The chief of Public Relations at the Penal Service of the Justice Ministry, Mehman Sadigov, did not confirm the information regardingVugar Aliyev. Sadigov said that Vugar met with his parents at the end of July. Prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment for contravening Articles 122.1.2 and 122.1.3 of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan are permitted to meet with relatives three times a year.
