Death Toll of Collapsed 16-storey Building Reaches 11

Azerbaijan, Baku /corr Trend I.Alizade / Last night another three bodies were pulled out from the wreckage of the 16-storey building, which collapsed in Baku on 28 August, Trend correspondent reported at the scene of the incident. The victims are currently being identified.

Last night the remains of an old women and a child were also pulled out from the ruins. As of the latest data received, the death toll has reached 11.

Initial accounts have revealed that gross violation of construction rules has caused the collapse of the building at the intersection of Nakhchivani and Mukhtarov Streets, according to Kamil Bagirov, head of the Civil Defense Department of the Civil Defense Troops of the Emergency Ministry.

Previously, the Emergency Ministry had warned Mutefekkir company of its violations of the construction rules. An investigation is currently underway to eradicate the violations, Bagirov said.

Rescue work is currently ongoing. The Baku Prosecutor's Office has filed a case in accordance with Articles 222.2 (violation of the safety regulations during construction, mining and other work, which results in death and injury) and Article 222.1 (violation of safety regulations during construction work) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.

The Prosecutor General's Office has informed Trend that the President of the company Mitefekkir Ali Muradov, who carried out the construction, as well as other senior company officials have been arrested.
