EU’s Commissar on Human Rights Meets with Arrested Azerbaijani Former Health Minister

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr.К.Zarbaliyeva / EU's commissar on human rights, Tomas Hammberg, met with Ali Insanov, the former Azerbaijani Health Minister, at the Bayil Investigation Cell 1, Togrul Babayev, Insanov's attorney, said to the Trend Agency on 4 September.

Hammberg has shown interest in conditions in the investigation cell, as well as the health of Ali Insanov. Insanov informed the European expert of his severe health problems having suffered from 8 different diseases and with no medical care being provided for him. Insanov said he was arrested due to political issues and the court made unfair decisions against him. Hammberg said he would look into the case.

The former minister was arrested in October 2005 for attempting to perform a coup d'etat, appropriation and embezzlement of state property, exceeding his commissions and responsibilities, and other serious crimes and was sentenced to 11 years imprisonment and had his property confiscated. Presently, Ali Insanov is kept in the Penal Service of the Bail Investigation cell. The minister has demanded that he be transferred to the medical institution of the Penal Service due to a hernia in his spine.
