Ten Sunken Vessels Pulled Out from Baku Bay

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr E. Huseynli / Ten sunken vessels were pulled out from Baku Bay in an effort to improve its ecological condition. The whereabouts of thirty-four vessels were discovered, the acting spokesman for Azerbaijan's Ecology and Natural Resources, Irada Ibrahimova, said on 6 September.

A part of the shore was cleared of large waste matter. Excavation vessels and suctions dredged the seabed.

Since the end of last year, large-scale arrangements have been implemented in Baku Bay to improve its ecological situation. The sanitation works will last until 2010. In this connection, a plan was developed to help identify and stop the estimated fifty entities who are pouring faecal waste into the bay.

Some eighty hectares of the Bibi Heybat area were re-soiled in order to stabilize its ecological situation. Some 200 hectares were monitored. An open canal where formation water was flowing was replaced by closed ferroconcrete canals.

In addition, 106 stationary lifting facilities were pulled down and reconstruction of the sewerage network of local residential areas was proposed.
