Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has supported a proposal to establish Turkmen Railways OJSC and instructed to work out this issue in detail, the country’s government said in a message.

This issue was discussed at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan.

The Turkmen president also noted the need to expand the network of railways in the country. In this aspect, he made special emphasis on replenishing the rolling stock with modern locomotives operating on electric engines.

It was earlier reported that the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway would give powerful impetus to the development of the Caspian region. The total length of the railway running from the steppes of Kazakhstan through the Karakum Desert to the mountain province of Gulistan in the north of Iran has been brought to 900 kilometers.

The Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway is part of the International North-South Transport Corridor.

The International North-South Transport Corridor is meant to connect Northern Europe with Southeast Asia.

The corridor is planned to transport 3-5 million tons of cargo per year at the initial stage and 10-12 million tons of cargo in the future.
