Two transport corridors - East-West and North-South, which are realized under the initiative, leadership and with participation of Azerbaijan became one of the most discussed topics at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Natig Amirov, assistant to the President of Azerbaijan for Economic Policy and Industry Issues said in an interview with state TV channel AzTV.

“The First – is the East-West transport corridor, which is defined and recognized in the world as the shortest land route for the transport of goods from China to Europe. Currently, the transport time of 60-70 days is reduced approximately three times, and in many cases even more,” Amirov said.

He further highlighted the second route, the North-South transport corridor.

“This route provides delivery of cargo to the countries of Europe from Iran, Pakistan and India by land,” Natig Amirov said.

He stressed that, at first sight they may seem like economic projects, but they are incredible political projects.

“That is, to implement these two projects, probably experts will confirm, the states of the world have fought hundreds of years. The East-West transport corridor has already been put into operation and serious work is being done on the North-South project. These projects were born thanks to the direct initiative, leadership and, most importantly, the serious will of the President of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan has made major investments in these projects, the President demonstrated a serious political will and, most importantly, was able to preserve the interest of the states of the world in these projects,” he said.

Amirov noted that, the market of neighboring Iran, Russia and Turkey covers 300 million people.

“These countries came to Azerbaijan. Today, such a friendly economic and political relations have been established with these countries, that the bulk of our exports are directed to these countries. As President Ilham Aliyev noted during the speech [at the Davos Forum], the establishment of friendly relations with neighbors is one of the most important factors on the way of protecting our interests,” Amirov said.

The International North-South Transport Corridor is meant to connect Northern Europe with Southeast Asia. It will serve as a link connecting the railways of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia. At the initial stage, it is planned to transport 6 million tons of cargo per year through the corridor and 15-20 million tons of cargo in the future.
