Azerbaijan's digital infrastructure project to generate Digital Silk Road between Europe, C.Asia

The project for the construction of a fiber-optic cable line between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan (Trans-Caspian fiber-optic cable line), implemented by AzerTelecom, a backbone Internet provider connecting Azerbaijan with the international Internet network, was discussed at the business meeting ‘Kazakhstan-Azerbaijan: New Opportunities for Cooperation’, Chairman of the board of directors of AzerTelecom, Fuad Allahverdiyev, said, AzerTelecom told Trend.

Allahverdiyev made the remark speaking at the meeting.

This project will contribute to the development of the ICT and telecommunications sectors in Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, and also spoke about other possibilities of this project.

“It will contribute to strengthening ICT cooperation in the region as a whole. To implement the project, an intergovernmental agreement was signed on its economic and technical potential. In addition, the implementation of the project will create an opportunity to build a ‘Digital Silk Road’ between Europe and Asia in transit through Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. The underwater backbone fiber optic cable line will meet the needs of Central Asia and neighboring countries,” Allahverdiyev added.

In turn, Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Azerbaijan Serzhan Abdykarimov, as well as a number of other participants of the meeting, spoke about the expansion of mutually beneficial cooperation between the business circles of Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.

During the business meeting, the parties exchanged views on new prospects and opportunities for expanding trade, economic and investment ties between the countries.

The project of the Trans-Caspian fiber-optic cable line is being implemented by AzerTelecom from the Azerbaijani side and Transtelecom from the Kazakh side.

Currently, AzerTelecom, in addition to Azerbaijan's role as an energy and transport center, is implementing the Azerbaijan Digital Hub program to turn the country into a regional digital center. The goal of the program is to transform the country into a digital hub for the Caucasus, CIS, Central and South Asia, the Middle East and adjacent regions.
