BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 1. The container traffic via the northern part of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), or the so-called Middle Corridor, may reach 270,000 TEUs by 2040, Trend reports.

A new EU-prepared study shows that, together with the southern part of TITR, which is expected to see growth of up to 254,000 TEUs, Middle Corridor will provide for the transportation of a total of 1.4 million containers through Central Asia, connecting to Europe by 2040.

Meanwhile, as the study notes, in 2022, the transportation of approximately 33,000 containers was recorded between the ports of Kazakhstan's Aktau and Azerbaijan's Baku. Through stakeholder consultations, it was determined that around 18,000 TEUs of this volume were transported along the Central Trans-Caspian Network (CTCN).

"If all of the action items and projects proposed in this study are implemented, the CTCN has the potential to reach a free-flowing transit time of 13 days between the EU and Asian hubs. In this case, the maximum container volumes on the CTCN could reach to 865,000 TEUs," the study added.

Utilizing project-specific models, it is projected that container traffic on the CTCN will experience significant growth, increasing from 18,000 TEUs in 2022 to 130,000 TEUs by the year 2040, the analysts say.

The Middle Corridor is a transportation and trade route that connects Asia and Europe, passing through several countries in the region. It is an alternative route to the traditional corridors.

The route starts in China and crosses Central Asian countries such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. It then passes through the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye before reaching Europe. The Middle Corridor offers a land route that connects the eastern parts of Asia, including China, with Europe, bypassing the longer maritime routes.
