EU sees rise in biogas output - main producers named

BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 30. Many EU members have introduced measures to promote biogas and biomethane, aligning with the European Commission's REPowerEU plan, the recent Commission's research said, Trend reports.

According to the report, in the EU, bioenergy derived from agricultural, forestry, and organic waste feedstock continues to dominate the renewable energy landscape, constituting approximately 59 percent of renewable energy consumption in 2021.

Primary solid biofuels (70.3 percent) are the most prevalent form of bioenergy, followed by liquid biofuels (12.9 percent), biogas/bio-methane (10.1 percent), and the renewable share of municipal waste (6.6 percent).

In 2021, indigenous biogas production in the EU experienced a 1.7-percent increase, reaching 14.9 million tons of oil equivalent (mtoe). Germany retained its position as the largest producer, contributing 7.5 mtoe (50.4 percent of the total), followed by Italy (13.9 percent, 2.1 mtoe), and France (9.4 percent, 1.4 mtoe). Belgium, Finland, Hungary, and Sweden did not report any biogas production.
