BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 4. Methane constitutes 15-20 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet it often gets overlooked in net-zero strategies, Rystad Energy, an independent energy research and business intelligence company from Norway, said, Trend reports.

Given methane's potency, which is over 25 times more than CO2, clear targets, rigorous monitoring, penalties for non-compliance, and incentives for methane capture are crucial, the analysts say.

According to Rystad Energy, major sources of methane include agriculture, especially livestock, and landfills. Investing in emerging agricultural technologies like cellular agriculture and precision fermentation can play a pivotal role in reducing emissions from livestock.

Moreover, promoting the capture of landfill gas and utilizing anaerobic digestion can transform these emissions into energy or hydrogen, curbing methane release, the experts noted.

As Rystad Energy analysts pointed out, the oil and gas sector significantly contributes to methane emissions, primarily through production and transportation infrastructure leaks.

Adopting best practices for regular and advanced leak detection, timely repairs, minimizing flaring, and expediting the deployment of modern air pneumatics can effectively slash emissions, the experts conclude.
