Azerbaijan tallies volume of its food imports

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 24. Azerbaijan's food imports increased by 3.36 percent ($25.1 million) in value terms and amounted to $773.3 million from January through April 2024, Trend reports.

According to the State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan, during the reporting period, the country imported 16,730 tons of meat (up 17.37 percent) worth $36.5 million (up 46.39 percent), 4,400 tons of milk (up 8.66 percent) worth $6.7 million (down 23.82 percent), 7, 936 tons of dairy products (up 28.05 percent) - $40.9 million (up 18.97 percent), 188.838 tons of vegetables and fruits (up 15.26 percent) - $126.4 million (up 24.76 percent), 3,577 tons of tea (down 20.2 percent) - $17.7 million (down 25.93 percent).

Azerbaijan also imported more than 343,349 tons of wheat, corn, and rice worth more than $104.2 million.

Imports of vegetable fats and oils amounted to 63,466 tons worth more than $74 million.

Meanwhile, Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover from January through April 2024 decreased by 23.76 percent, or $4.2 billion, compared to the indicator for the same period in 2023 (from $17.8 billion to $13.6 billion).

Exports accounted for $8.1 billion in the structure of foreign trade turnover, which is $4.4 billion, or 35.09 percent less than in the same period last year. The share of exports in the foreign trade turnover amounted to 59.92 percent, up from 70.37 percent a year earlier.

Azerbaijan's imports in the reporting period increased year-on-year by $166.9 million, or 3.15 percent, from $5.2 billion to about $5.4 billion. The share of imports in the foreign trade turnover amounted to 40.08 percent, up from 29.63 percent a year earlier.

Consequently, the balance of foreign trade turnover, while remaining positive during the review period, declined year-on-year by over $4.5 billion, or 62.9 percent, to $2.7 billion against $7.2 billion in the 2023 review period.
