ASTANA, Kazakhstan, November 11. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has met with Luc Rémont, CEO of Électricité de France (EDF), to discuss potential collaborations in Kazakhstan’s energy sector, including nuclear power, Trend reports.
During the meeting, President Tokayev was briefed on EDF’s operations as the world’s largest operator of nuclear power plants and its strategic plans.
President Tokayev shared that a majority of Kazakh citizens recently endorsed the construction of the country’s first nuclear power plant in a national referendum. EDF has been shortlisted as a potential technology supplier for the project, and Tokayev highlighted the potential for an international consortium to lead this critical development.
Luc Rémont affirmed EDF’s commitment to a productive partnership with Kazatomprom, Kazakhstan’s national nuclear energy company, and offered several ideas for advancing joint projects in renewable energy.
As a state-owned enterprise, EDF is a major force in the energy sector, operating 67 nuclear reactors—56 in France, 9 in the United Kingdom, and 2 in China—representing around 18% of global nuclear energy capacity. The company plans to construct 14 additional reactors within France, further reinforcing its global energy footprint.
