BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 12. The reduction of emissions in European countries has been possible mainly due to the rapid increase in the use of renewable energy sources, European Union Commissioner for Climate Action Wopke Hoekstra said at the COP29 event on the theme “Ministerial Dialogue: Scaling up Investment for Tripling Renewables and Doubling Energy Efficiency," Trend reports.
He emphasized that while emissions in the European Union countries decreased by 8 percent last year, globally they increased by 1.3 percent.
“Today, more than half of Europe's electricity is generated by wind and solar power. This also surpasses all fossil fuels. Because renewable energy comes from local sources, it serves to create jobs and protect the environment. Meeting the targets would reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 10 billion tons by the end of the decade, more than the total emissions of European Union countries in three years. This is quite an ambitious goal, but I think it can be achieved,” Hoekstra said.
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will continue until November 22, opened at Baku Olympic Stadium on November 11. The event is the largest organized by Azerbaijan to date and is the first time the region has hosted the event in Azerbaijan.
The highest-level climate action summit will be held at COP29 on November 12-13 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The main expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate finance.
In addition to being a top priority that sets the stage for action, the creation of climate finance will also contribute to meeting the 1.5°C commitment by bringing everyone together.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties decide otherwise, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is based in Bonn.
