BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 21. The European Investment Bank (EIB) is providing a 50 million euro loan to Bratislava’s municipal water utility, Bratislavská vodárenská spoločnosť (BVS), to modernize and expand the city’s water and wastewater infrastructure, Trend reports.
The investment aims to improve service reliability for nearly half a million residents while enhancing environmental sustainability.
The project will replace aging infrastructure with advanced technologies to reduce water loss, improve efficiency, and expand the network to accommodate the city's growing population. It will also help protect surface and underground water sources, including the Danube. Additionally, BVS will increase its use of biomass energy, reducing its carbon footprint and aligning with Bratislava’s climate goals.
“EIB cooperation with BVS means people and businesses in Bratislava can look forward to cleaner water, efficient wastewater management, and eco-friendly practices,” said EIB Vice-President Kyriacos Kakouris.
BVS CEO Ladislav Kizak emphasized that the financing, secured on more favorable terms than commercial loans, will be key to enhancing customer service and environmental protection.
