By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:
The electric car factory in Kutaisi, western Georgia, will produce its first electric car in August 2020, said State Representative in Imereti Zviad Shalamberidze, Trend reports referring to Georgian media.
According to him, at the same time, the factory will also start producing components for cars.
"Electric cars will be exported abroad as well as be sold on the local market,” said Shalamberdize.
He noted that at the first stage, 5,000 cars will be produced per year, but then the annual production capacity of the factory will increase to 40,000 cars.
Georgian industrial group Aigroup is building the electric car factory on an area of 100 hectares in Kutaisi. After the commissioning, the complex will employ about 3,000 people.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the production of first electric cars under a Georgian trademark was signed between Georgia's Aigroup and China's Changan Corporation, which has a track record of 157 years in the industry, in May 2019.
Chairman of the company's board of directors Kakha Guledani said that work on factory construction already began in October 2019, on the territory of the old airport.
"According to the project, the factory will produce four models of electric cars. Electric cars made in Georgia with the inscription Made in Georgia will become the main export product from Georgia to the markets of European countries," Guledani said.
He noted that the project will be implemented mainly by local specialists.
