Sweden, WB supporting Georgia by addressing wastewater treatment challenges

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 14

A new wastewater treatment plant has been opened in Georgian Telavi city, Trend reports via the Municipal Development Fund of Georgia.

As reported, 16.9 million lari ($4.9 million) was invested in project.

The project was implemented by the Municipal Development Fund with financial support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and the World Bank.

Georgian Infrastructure Minister Irakli Karseladze said that another project is also planned to be implemented in Telavi, which includes the renovation of Tsitsmadiani head building of the wastewater treatment facilities and construction of a new highway.

"After the implementation of these projects, Telavi will have a 24-hour uninterrupted water supply, as in Zugdidi, Kutaisi, Chiatura and Tsnori towns of Georgia", said Karseladze.

Sweden and the World Bank have been supporting the government of Georgia with addressing wastewater treatment challenges since 2013, resulting in:

- The renovation of two wastewater treatment plants in Telavi and Tskaltubo;
- Piloting sustainable wastewater management practices;
- Building the capacity in sustainable wastewater management at the local, regional and national levels;
- Providing support with the preparation and development of the legislative framework.
