Some 188 greenhouse complexes are currently being built in Turkmenistan, Trend reports via the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan (UIET).

With a total area of more than 1,792 hectares, these greenhouses are providing the domestic and foreign markets with fresh vegetables all year round.

Currently, the country has 81 greenhouses totaling more than 430 hectares, all of which are outfitted with modern equipment and run on cutting-edge technology.

Agriculture is one of Turkmenistan's most important economic sectors. Wheat, cotton, rice, sugar beets, fodder, vegetables, melons, fruit, and berry crops are the main types of agricultural crops grown in the country.

Greenhouses became increasingly important in ensuring the country's food security. Turkmen private firms grow approximately 1,580 tons of cucumbers, 520 tons of sweet and bitter peppers, and 550 tons of lemons annually.

Back in 2017, Turkmenistan started banana production on a-1.32-hectare greenhouse plot. The greenhouse presently grows about 2,000 banana trees, with a yearly output of 60 tons of bananas.

Greenhouse tomatoes have become a key export commodity for the country. Turkmen private producers exported 51,314 tons of tomatoes worth more than $56 million during the first 11 months of 2021. Turkmen tomatoes are primarily imported into Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates.
