( dpa ) - The British ferry port of Dover was closed to all shipping movements Thursday as high winds swept parts of the country, causing the death of a lorry driver when his vehicle was blown over.

A spokeswoman for the port of Dover, on the south coast, said the port, which operates main ferry links to France across the English Channel, had been closed in the interests of safety.

In the northern county of Cumbria a 45-year-old man died when his lorry was swept into the central reservation of a motorway.

Southern and northern Britain were most affected by the bout of wet and windy weather, with winds reaching speeds of 130 kilometres per hour.
