( dpa ) - France's electrical engineering group Alstom will compete against Germany's Siemens and Canada's Bombardier on a 55- billion-baht (1.8-billion-dollar) bid to extend Bangkok's elevated train system later this month, media reports said Thursday.

The Thai government has decided to go-ahead with the 23-kilometre "Purple Line" extension of Bangkok's existing sky-train system after securing a 18 billion baht (580 million dollar) loan from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to help finance the project.

"The Purple Line will be the first one we are looking at as our analysis shows it fits the products we have" Marc Chatelard, senior vice president for Asia-Pacific of Alstom Transport told the Bangkok Post.

Alstom, which has had a presence in Thailand since 1950, lost out to Siemens in previous bids on Bangkok's existing elevated train and subway lines.
