Baku Metro to Improve Passenger Transportation 12% by End 2008

Azerbaijan, Baku, 24 October / Trend / The Baku Metro plans to transport 200mln passengers by the end of 2008, while 178mln was transported in 2007, Tagi Ahmadov, Head of the Baku Metro, said to official press.

The Baku Metro transported 109mln passengers in 2002, 128mln in 2003, 138mln in 2004, 145mln in 2005, and 154mln passengers in 2006.

The Metro is capable of transporting 1mln passengers per day, he said.

According to Ahmadov, number of the Baku Metro stations will rise to 70 from current 21 by 2040.

Construction of the platform and two exits have been completed at the Azadlig Avenue station, which is expected to be put into operation by the end of 2009. An electric substation was constructed to provide the station with energy.

The station is 12 metres underground. A total of 50,000 cu m of digging and 4,500 cu m of concreting has been carried up to now. The tunnel with the length of 1,300m will link the station with the Nasimi station, opened on 9 August 2008.

The Baku Metro was put into operation in 1967.
