Over 1 million Tons of Wheat Imported to Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, November 21/ Trend , corr S. Babayeva/ About 1.1mln tons of wheat has been imported to Azerbaijan since the beginning of the year, a source in the Ministry of Agriculture said.

"Wheat has been imported from Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine," a source said.

As of November 1, the production of grain and leguminous plants reached record rate. The volume of production of grain (including corn) reached 2.5mln tons which is 492,000 tons more than the indicator of 2007.

The sown area totaled to 894,030 ha.

Productivity per hectare was 27.9 metric centners which is 0.8% centners more than the figure of the same year of 2007.

About 1.7mln tons (68.7%) of total grain production accounted for winter crops and spring wheat.

The yearly demand for the food grain is nearly 3mln tons 1mln of which is imported.

The Ministry of agriculture forecasts that Azerbaijan will fully meet its demand for bread-grain due to domestic production soon.

Azerbaijan's wheat reserves has reached 1.4mln tons, Ministry said.
