Georgia, Tbilisi, Feb. 23 / Trend , N.Kirtskhalia/

A survey conducted by Kviris Palitra revealed that over 20.6 percent of the population in Georgia owes debt to local commercial banks.

Roughly 20.6 percent of 403 respondents have debt at local banks, while 79.6 percent of respondents said they had not taken loans from banks, the newspaper said.

Several opposition parties want the authorities to urge private banks to restructure or write-off the debt of customers.

The parties said the August events and global economic crisis deprived many citizens of their employment and income.

Several Georgian banks have launched a program to restructure debts, but other banks are establishing special services to get their money back from the indebted individuals.
