Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedov outlined the "strategic character" of the country's partnership with Russia before his visit to Moscow scheduled for March 24-25.

"Turkmenistan and Russia maintain strategic cooperation," the Altyn Asyr national television channel quoted Berdimuhammedov as saying at a cabinet meeting.

Russia is an age-old partner of Turkmenistan, the president said. Russia has purchased the bulk of the gas exported from the country in recent years. The construction of the Caspian pipeline along the coast of the Caspian Sea via Kazakhstan has further strengthened Gazprom's position on the Central Asian market. So far, deliveries have been made via Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan through the Central Asia-Center gas pipeline system.

Berdimuhammedov emphasized the importance of his upcoming official visit to Russia.

A Turkmen-Russian business forum and an exhibition of Turkmen goods will be held during the visit.

"We will always maintain good and close relations with our neighbors, including Russia," Berdimuhammedov said.
