In the first quarter, the import of cars to Azerbaijan reduced 2.3 percent, said the Head of the State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan Aydin Aliyev on May 24.
"Mainly the import of small cars declined because of the introduction of ban on the import of cars that do not meet the environmental, aesthetic and operational requirements," said Aliyev.
According to him, the ban was imposed on cars that do not conform to the rules of technical safety and environmental criteria.
"In the first quarter, car import to the country reduced more than two times, compared to the same period of 2008, which makes up 43 percent of the import of cars in last year," said Aliyev.
Yet from 2007 to motor vehicles imported into the territory of Azerbaijan from abroad, apply an excise tax. Prior to 2007, imports of vehicles in Azerbaijan are subject to only the road tax.
Starting from 2007, Azerbaijan introduced the differential system on collecting excises from imported cars. The rate of the tax on auto carriers with the volume of the motor up to 2.000 cubic cm will reach 0.15 AZN per each cubic cm. The rate for auto carriers with the volume of motor up to 3.000 cubic cm, the rate will reach 300 AZN + 1 AZN per each cubic cm higher 2.000 cubic cm. For auto carriers with the volume of motor up to 4.000 cubic cm, the rate will reach 1300 AZN + 2 AZN per each cubic cm higher 3.000 cubic cm. For auto carriers, which volume of motor is more than 4.000 cubic cm, the rate will reach 3300 AZN + 4 AZN per each cubic cm higher 4.000 cubic cm.
Official rate on May 14 is 0.8036 AZN/USD.
