Azerbaijan to meet grain demand from domestic production in 2009: minister

Azerbaijan's grain output including maize is expected to reach 3 million tons in 2009, 2.2 million tons of which will be wheat, Azerbaijani Agriculture Minister Ismat Abbasov said at a Cabinet of Ministers' meeting on country's socio-economic development in the first half of 2009.

Azerbaijan's grain output including maize is expected to reach 3 million tons in 2009, 2.2 million tons of which will be wheat, Azerbaijani Agriculture Minister Ismat Abbasov said at a Cabinet of Ministers' meeting on country's socio-economic development in the first half of 2009, AzerTaj reported.

"The figure will represent the highest result in country's grain production history with a rise of about 500,000 tons compared to 2008 and will enable to fully meet wheat demand due to domestic production," the minister said.

He said sown areas were enlarged 215,400 hectares up to 1,780,800 hectares in 2009.

"Sown areas of wheat increased 206,700 hectares and totalled 810,700 hectares," the minister said.
