Azerbaijan, Baku, Oct. 29 / Trend /

The Balakhani polygon on municipal waste utilization, as well as facilities on placement and utilization of solid household wastes in the Surakhani and Garadagh districts of Baku were transferred to disposal of the Clean City Open Joint Stock Company (OJSC) from the Baku City Administration, the OJSC said.

The process of transfer completed on Oct. 14 and was carried out in accordance with the Presidential Decree, dated on Aug. 6 in 2008 on "Improvement of management of solid household wastes in Baku", and to ensure the activities of the Clean City OJSC.

Due to the absence of the possibility of utilizing and neutralizing the wastes at sites in the Surakhani and Garadagh districts, at present all municipal solid wastes must be delivered to the Balakhani polygon.

To cut the negative impact of Balakhani polygon's activities on the environment, the Clean City OJSC launched a series of necessary measures: preventing the ignition of waste and cutting flue cover, serious registration of the received wastes, registering equipment and individuals for access to the area of the polygon, repairing internal roads and areas to receive waste, creating necessary infrastructure at the site, constructing the fence, and protecting the territory.

In order to apply international practices to the management of solid municipal waste, the project on "Integrated management of solid municipal waste" was launched with the support of the World Bank.

Under the project with the participation of foreign experts and consultants, a project will be drafted to rehabilitate polygons. Within the project "Integrated management of solid municipal waste", the Balakhni polygon will be rehabilitated in accordance with modern international standards.
