India wants Iranian gas: ambassador

We have had long relations with Iran in the field of energy and we are interested in buying gas from Tehran, the Indian ambassador to Tehran said.

Sanjay Singh who was speaking to reporters Sunday on the occasion of India's Independence Day said that economic growth in India has reached 8.6 percent and his country needs more energy supply to its demand, the Mehr News Agency reported.

"In the next 10 years we will need 4.3 times more energy," he said.

"Iran has been selling oil to India for decades," he said adding, "India is also interested in purchasing gas from Iran and we are negotiating in this regard."

"We started cooperating in the field of petrochemicals as well," he added.

He stated that Iran is India's neighbor and friend and the Peace Pipeline is one of the huge projects Delhi is working with Tehran on. 

The Indian diplomat said that the trade level between the two countries is currently $14 billion and expressed hope that it would increase in the future.
