Azerbaijan, Baku, Nov. 5 / Trend /

Azertunelmetrotikinti will purchase a mechanical system produced by the German Herrenknecht to lay tunnels by late 2010, the company's head, Shaig Efendiyev, said at a meeting discussing the future development of the Baku Metro. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev chaired the meeting.

"The company is building a new modern plant to produce concrete tubing to effectively use the complex," Efendiyev said.

According to the company head, producing reinforced concrete tubing and commissioning the complex will greatly reduce dependence on foreign suppliers. The plant's capacity will also allow for the production of a 15-meter tunnel segment each day.

To date, the country was able to build 60-65 meters of tunnels per month using Soviet equipment in accordance with its design speed. The new complex will allow 10-15 meters of tunnels to be built per day in the same direction and 250-300 meters to be built over one month, he said.

Efendiyev said the state started investing in the construction of new metro stations in 2006 and investments in this sector have jumped from 15.5 million to 150 million in 2010.

The Baku Metro has been operating since 1967 and has 22 stations.
