On Wednesday, the parliamentary committee on natural resources, energy and ecology submitted to the Parliament a bill on ratification of agreement between the governments of Azerbaijan and Russia on the rational use of water resources of the trans-boundary Samur River and cooperation in its protection.

During the meeting it was noted that this issue, reflecting cooperation between the two sides, has a long history, and the result was the signing of an agreement on protection and use of the Samur River on Sept. 3 in Baku.

During the meeting, the chairman of the parliamentary committee Valeh Alasgarov noted that the main purpose of the agreement is to preserve the ecosystem of the Samur River and ensure the use of rivers for domestic and other purposes. Under the agreement, to protect the ecosystem of the river, the water reserves in the border area have been divided equally between the sides, except environmental water drain equal to 30.5 percent.

Alasgarov also noted that a joint Azerbaijani-Russian commission on division of the river's water resources has been established to implement the agreement. The commission operates under the chairmanship of the two co-chairmen, appointed by both sides. Also, the commission forms a working group and working body for operational division of the water. These bodies conduct activities on a parity basis.
